New collection of "STEM" books added to the Library

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)

The Tri-City Public Library has recently added a significant number of books for kids K-12 on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) books. Most of the titles were selections from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) “Best STEM Books” for 2018 and 2019.

The books range from picture books to young adult non-fiction on a wide range of topics such as astronomy, nature, biographies of scientists and doctors, mathematics, engineering and computing. There are also science-based fiction books for young readers to encourage curiosity about science and related topics.

According to Head Librarian, Chet Brandt, coming across the lists from the NSTA was a revelation. “We realized that this was a great opportunity to utilize grant funding from the Illinois State Library to enhance our library collection in way to benefit children and youth in the area by making them more aware of the breadth and excitement of STEM. Having recommendations made by science teachers made selection of items much easier.” The Library used money from their annual “Per Capita” grant to make this new collection possible.

The collection will be temporarily displayed on a mobile unit in the children’s area of the library. The Tri-City Public Library is located at 600 S. Main Street in Buffalo. For more information contact the staff at 217-364-8181 or via email at tricitylibrary@gmail.com.
